Every 10 years,
coinciding with the federal census, states must redraw the lines of
their legislative districts.
This
“redistricting” is required to ensure that balanced districts
reflect any shifts in population size or density.
Each new State Representative’s District must, by law, contain equal
population - a number equal to roughly 41,000 people.

In the 6th Worcester District, the change is rather
dramatic: The towns of East Brookfield and Oxford are removed, as
are certain precincts from both Charlton and Spencer. In return,
the town of Dudley added.
On November 1,
the Legislature approved plans to redraw the boundaries for the 160
State Representative and 40 State Senate districts, with the 9 new
Congressional districts receiving approval on November 15th. |
For
me this change to the 6th Worcester District is
bittersweet. I am deeply saddened to no longer represent those
communities in East Brookfield, Oxford, Charlton and Spencer.
However, I am thrilled to be adding the wonderful town of Dudley,
and look forward greatly to the opportunity to get to know and
represent those who call Dudley home.
